I liked the alternate point of view of the fight. Sometimes second-hand observation can make something that happens quickly more interesting.

There's a lot of stuff to get through in this chapter so I'll need every trick I can muster to make it vaguely interesting.

I've used that technique many times before. And also I've used someone narrating something that already happened.

Either Chiaki knows she ruined the game by dying, and whoever is controlling this wouldn't really allow it; or Chiaki's "I have to die" statement was a prediction and not a plan; or she knows the Hooded Hood or Faite are involved somewhere but she can't get to them unless she dies first - kind of an escape mechanism where there is none.

We'll certainly see later in this chapter.

Noted.

For a small FYI aside, as a samurai Chiaki isn't too afraid to die if it's necessary, and she feels she lived a pretty good life so far. What gives her a fear of dying is she feels that quite a few people emotionally depend on her, and she doesn't want to hurt them.

    Quote:
Indeed. I suspect she felt a responsibility to the three women with her in thier current predicament too.

Not just them, she also worries about anyone who formed any kind of bond with her. Hatman, Akiko, Anna, etc.

Also, on another aside: Because I'm falling behind on Zephiir's Prophecy I'm going to confuse people even more and start posting a 2nd story with Anna and Chiaki called Catch and Release. It has a surprise ending.
