For example, Anna has the body and presumably the sexual functions of an adult female. She's probably got programming about sexual reproductive behaviour and even sex for pleasure. But if somebody seduces her, taking advantage of the gap between her knowledge and her experience, are they committing the equivalent of statutory rape on a minor? There's no actual law protecting a robot's personal rights but there might be a moral offence.

    Quote:
There's no law because it's never really been done before. Tandi was designed to be mature enough for sex. Anna was designed way beyond her initial purpose.

There are places where it's illegal to have sex with mechanical objects. Some states in America have prosecuted people for coupling with cars and vending machines.

Or what about Asil? Chronologically she's about nine years old. She has the ability to change her age at will, from infancy to extreme old age. By choice she defaults to around 18. She holds down an adult job but she's never had a sexual relationship. When is she "of age"?

    Quote:
Since she's human it works in reverse - she's as adult as she appears until she's proved not to be. So most likely a court would want someone who sleeps with her to prove what age she appeared at the time of consent. It gets much more complicated if she goes to bed as a 20 year old and wakes up as an 8 year old.

Asil is a clone (of Lisa) so while she's human in the DNA sense there's still citizenship issues to consider.

ZOXXON genetically engineered Cressida and brought suit for ownership.

    Quote:
As for drinking, they'll claim they're only responsible for what her I.D. says, unless it's obviously fake.

    Quote:
Then again, some courts may say she's ALWAYS off-limits as a minor because she has the *capability* to be one.

It's how that determination is made that I'm uncertain of.

    Quote:

      Quote:
Adulthood is a short-form test for various standards of maturity and responsibility. Adults are held responsible for their action in law, economically, socially, and morally. Minors are held to different standards. Adults have rights, including the right to bear arms, to use heavy machinery, to risk their health in various consensual ways like sports, sex, smoking, taking dangerous jobs etc. So the question of when and how an ariticial life form can be adjudged adult is actually a key issue in sentient rights.

    Quote:
Most likely it'll be determined by disasters. Anna will be trusted with more and more until she gets herself into trouble, or gets someone else in trouble, and then she'll lose those rights.

I think the LL at least may use a different and more cautious standard. They accord AIs human rights but also tend to be protective of young life forms.
