I have toyed with the idea of an outdoors/garage cat to hunt the things, but then I wonder if the expense of the cat is worth it. Since I'm allergic to animal hair I'm not too wild on the idea, but I'm thinking about it.

I didn't find the old hunting cat expensive. He even caught a fair amount of his own food. Our current cat, Magellan, is much more of a floppy lap-cat with the brains of a chamois leather, and he's only costly when he needs the vet.
