I think it's difficult to get the balance right. If Jay goes on a date then that's a night he's not saving lives.

Meanwhile there are powerful super-types like Lara offering to fill in for him so he can go (or just to take a night off). Yet he's still stuck in his old habits - or at least that's the benefit of the doubt version. She'd hate to think he doesn't trust anyone.

As for that sounding a little hypocritical since Lara doesn't show any interest in dating either - she's well aware that she feels detached from the non-superhero community in the Parodyverse. She'd like to look beyond it, but has a time-management issue - when she's not in neck-deep trouble in the Parodyverse she's usually at home trying to unwind with a couple of friends. Not surprisingly, her not worrying about time is what doomed her last relationship. Oh, and she's also even more gunshy now that's she's missing part of her Parodyverse memories.

Chiaki has the problem of being a trained samurai; same thing that makes her successful. Since most males who don't know her are terrified of her that makes it difficult to find someone who understands her. Plus she has money, which means she has to be careful to avoid con men who are after it.

That's one reason I like to have a thriving back-catalogue of supporting characters. That way I can throw in romances between them or between them and a consenting poster character without complications.

There are always complications.
