Well, Tandi's mostly plastic, and that's with the upgrade from a 6000 to a 9000 series processor sometime after her first appearances.

I agree that Miiri's bought out of the whole House protection thing herself but she's always been supportinve of tent-sisters who still want in; and outcast Vespiir needed to belong to someone more than just about anyone, so Miiri found her a House whose reputation would protect her from pretty much anything on Caph. You may recall Vizh's encounter with the people seeking to raid Miiri.

My take on this is that Miiri is quite adept at subverting Caphan customs to suit her needs by now.
