Quote: As I recall, Vespiir wasn't just saving herself though, but pretty much all of reality from the Carnifex when she agreed to the Hood's terms, since she was coming to warn the Legion about his true nature; something she couldn't have done if she was a gibbering idiot. Which does make one wonder what the Hooded Hood would have done if Vespiir refused to go along with the deal, since getting rid of the Carnifex was a fairly high priority for him.
Or am I misremembering that particular plot point?
I don't know that you are, I think it just comes down to an interpretation of this scene. From the Hood's wording, I took what she did as a bargain for the extension of her sanity only, rather than the idea that he'd undo the warning about the Carnifex and thus doom the entire Parodyverse.
It's worth noting that, regardless of what this particular deal was, she likely did make her first deal with the Hood under that level of "the entire universe is at stake" duress, which does soften the betrayal. I would still argue that breaking a deal (especially one made under duress) after the danger is less dishonorable than collaborating with an enemy against your friends. If the stakes were no greater than her own welfare, then one could legitimately say she sold out her friends to save herself.
Honestly though, while that sounds really harsh, I don't blame her. She had a gun to her head, and she knew exactly what she was faced with losing. Not everyone in a story should be completely selfless, and she already saved the universe more times than I'll ever do. I can't blame her for blinking when faced with a fate she now fully understood, one that terrified her, versus intentionally misleading her friends (into a by-no-means-certain fate.)
Which is partly why this one made me sad... She deserved to feel like a hero for all time for what she did for everyone. Now, already, the Hood has taken that away.
Quote: As for other heroes who've made some shaky deals with the Hood to get what they want, Sorceress and Mr. Epitome were willing to compromise themselves much worse than the Caphan did. At least in my opinion.
I'd have to be reminded of their initial deals to compare. I do think there are plenty of characters that have traveled further down the slippery slope... I just don't think there are as many that have been faced with such a cliff-like dividing line at the start.
