Subj: I guess they'll be the sole residents of what's left of the building, then.

It's an interesting suspects shortlist, and a hard one to interview.

Very short list, but I'm probably forgetting a few so shorter than that even for me.

Yep, Lisa summonsed the meteor. She didn't screw up the teleport.

The suspect list for that is even longer. Including Otto himself.

I can't help but think that someone as intelligent as the Baroness wouldn't have picked up something from those virtual years.

Besides a conscience, I also suspect that she saw Mumph in action with that Chronometer of Infinity, and wondered why he doesn't use it to fix everything up so he can rule the universe. During all that time, she probably did get to see the answer to that question: That as anyone really powerful would tell the Baroness, power is actually an illusion. The more you have, the more work it is to maintain it, until you really just become a slave.

There was a whole entire movie on the subject, and though it was a comedy, that was the overwhelming message behind it: Bruce Almighty. Jim Carrey's character was made God for a while while God took a vacation, and discovered that not only having to maintain all of that power was a nightmare, but it didn't help at all the things he wished it would help with.

I suppose it's a matter of how cause and effect are linked through time.

This I wanted to comment on, because - and I didn't mention this before - Chiaki actually has a much better gift than Faite does.

Chiaki's helps with her fighting skills because when she's facing an opponent, her gift shows her every single possible move that opponent can make, and gives her an emotional cue to how likely it is to happen, all at once, in a split second. How she managed to sort through it all is a mystery, but it's presumed that she didn't at first, and had to learn.

Consequently, if she gets a singular vision that's strong enough to cause pain or fear, she knows it's inevitable, and she'd better head it off before that time comes. Her visions give her no time reference, though; she figures that out by the progression of events she sees. Sometimes, though, she gets one out of the blue that she has no context for, she won't know when it will happen. And occasionally she'll get a "broken vision" which seems nonsensical to her. Sometimes that leads to her being caught by surprise, because she didn't understand what she was seeing when she got the warning.

Faite also sees all outcomes at the same time, but with no intensity cues. If she sees someone stand on a corner, she'll know every possible way that person can go, or maybe even just stay put, but won't know which one is most likely. So if she wants to coax this person into a particular direction, she has to alter the odds somehow. By, say, pushing a storm that way and making it start raining, so the person heads toward shelter.

What she does have over Chiaki, though, is experience tracing back all of those outcomes to a root central cause, or one thing that modifies all of them at once. Which is what makes her an ideal suspect for messing with the Coefficient of Local Incarnation.

She would see a vision of the Lair Legion being turned into roaches, among other visions about them. She would start tracing that possibility back to see what would have caused it, until the threads attached to it diminish to just one: The Baroness pushing that button.

Then she'd look backward again to see what factor can interfere with that button being pushed, and realize that tampering with people's free will is useless, so that's out. She can't tamper with the machine, because Otto would realize that. So she would conclude she'd have to change one of the forces of the universe temporarily to make the machine inert. Even if it does make Lisa angry.

And even if she didn't do it, she probably knows who did, even if she doesn't know their name.

Psychological office warfare. I one hadtwo staff members who disliked each other quite a bit. I had to intervene because whenever one of them waned to use the printer urgently the other would deliberately set up a long queue of stuff to delay it. It was heading towards murder.

See? I warned you. Those printers are terrifying.

Can you do anything to extend the time before the Edit function vanishes from posts? I'd like to correct some typos in Untold Tales #355 (first posted 1st December) but as of today I can't access the edit function.

I can, provided I can remember where that setting is.

EDIT: I found it. It's now set to One Month.
