Pairing up is another problem. Many fictional narratives are by nature reductive, so if two cast members hook up it has to be some major plot point or startlig new status quo. Sometimes it can just be a coffee.

Remarkably, a check check reveals I've got rid of rather less female characters than male ones, even discounting villains who by far skew towards being male.
