All I can suggest is that you look at the settings on the batch converter and see if it has anything on character encoding for input and output.

I may look for a different free online batch converter. If I must I'll try and cobble together a Word macro, but those things often elude me.

Oh, and I had a very fine Pate, Sausages and Mash and Trifle, washed down by a very engaging pint of Aspals. I hope you meal was as good...

The venue was more interesting than the meal. It was a rebuilt 17th century manorhouse/farm complex with spectacular views over the Lincolnshire countryside. Very nice conversion and a great library (that included two of my books!). Approved.

I think I've cracked it.

I used Notepad++, which has a bulk text replace function that didn't want to rewrite already functioning smart-quotes into non-functioning ones or into dumb quotes. I ran 'replaces' on the garbage codes for " ' - é and ... That was tedious enough, requiring full passes eight times (different codes) in two major directories.

However, the problems are pretty much solved, except the pages now show dumb quites not smart ones, which I think we can live with. Notepad ++ easily fixed the [body] background colour issue too without messing anything else up. I'm uploading the corrected pages to my website now.

So full marks to Notepad++, except that the executable file from the offical website came packaged with a virus. The "minimal" zip file alternative was virus-free so, and that's what I used.
