Though I worry the workers were probably only angry because of unfair work conditions. Stick it to the man!

If I ever met someone who identified themselves as the Sheriff of Nottingham I think I'd go out of my way to steal something from him.

    Quote:
I was talking last year with the Lord High Sheriff of Lincolnshire. He was telling me that the Sheriff of another county (I forget which) had become the envy of his fellow sheriffs by invoking a power last used in the late 18th century, the right to raise a militia in time of need.

    Quote:
There had been a worker riot at a local Chinese takaway, and about a dozen stroppy kitchen staff had occupied the building and were hurling stuff at the police who were trying to evict them. There are serious judicial rules the police have to follow to storm a place like that. The Sheriff therefore invoked his right to a militia and deputised the entire local rugby club. This militia, operating under rules of engagement set in medieval times, was then deployed to quell the rioters - which they did.

Every other Sheriff in the UK has taken notes.
