    Quote:
Al B. Harper Chapter 20: Family Ties (a tie in to UTT #331)

“Al...?” Yuki Shiro entered the archscientist’s office in the lower reaches of the mansion and tentatively called his name.

Al B. turned from the mantle to face her, a look of anxiousness on his face, his brow furrowed. Yuki walked toward him and gently rubbed his shoulder.

“…It’s not so much that I don’t understand magic, and the supernatural” he softly murmured. “More to the point – I understand all too well how destructive it can be.” He held up the small framed photo he was holding.

Yuki took it from his hands and admired its delicate filigree frame before focusing on the couple in the picture, her internal processing unit took a second to cross-reference the features of the handsome couple and confirm their identity. It wasn’t necessary, she’d seen them before; the young African-American marine resplendent in his dress uniform smiling broadly at the camera, and the gorgeous woman on his arm - her dark raven hair piled high and bright red floral dress hinted to both the era the photo was taken and at her Mediterranean background, as did her long Latin eyelashes beneath which deep green eyes looked out shyly, and perhaps with a slight trace of fear, to something beyond where the photographer must have stood.

They were Al B.’s parents. His late parents.

“You’re worried that your mother’s family might be involved in this?” Yuki asked.

“Not directly,” Al B. responded. “The House of del Luna have been content to muddle themselves with their own European clan wars and in-fighting for some time now. The Lycan skirmishes of the Balkans still haven’t been resolved for either side so I’ve been told, and are probably continuing this very moment.”

    “Then?” Yuki queried further.

Al B. took the photo from her hands and placed it back on the mantle, next to the photo of Cody and Kara, his twin children with Kinki the Conqueress with whom he had only recently been reunited.

“Something like this is bound to have all the players scrambling.” Al B. replied. “The undead, the vampires, the witches….and the lycans.” He touched the photo of Cody and Kara. “The del Luna clan have ignored me all these years since our last encounter, but I’m not certain that will continue when they discover I have heirs.”

“Are you sure?” Yuki replied. “I thought this was just a localised threat to do with the-”

Al B. cut her off with a shake of his head. “No, I can feel it in my blood.” He laughed dryly at his own joke. “Anyway, I wouldn’t be an archscientist if I hadn’t prepared for this with…scientific defences.” He winked at Yuki and took her arm. “We’d better not keep Hatman and the others waiting.”

Yuki didn’t need her ipu to confirm he was still afraid, but it did anyway.

    To be continued…
