Stoker's Dracula was published in the 1880s but wasn't popular before the first movie version in the 1920s. Don Calmet was a hundred and fourty years earlier. I don't have an unabridged copy of his work. I don't know if a full one was ever translated into English. But Calmet quoted extensively from earlier publications like the "Jewish Letters" of the Marquis d'Argens, which was translated into English in 1739 as The Jewish Spy, and draws on various world newspaper accounts of vampire incidents.

Another early source was the famous Voltaire, who writes in his Dictionaire Philosophique that "Nothing was spoken of between 1730 and 1735 but vampires. They were laid wait for, their hearts torn out and burned... The more they were burned, the more they abounded."

That's fine. I've been preoccupied getting a couple of stories ready for a magazine called Wonderlust (which is not a Kirk-type publication, despite its name) which should hit the stands in a week or two. One of the stories debuted on the PVB seven or eight years ago. The other is new.
