Modern games have a progression to either a boss or a maximum level, and then there are things to do after that to keep people playing.


The game only had to keep people going long enough to disseminate and trigger the virus.

But more realistically, most "persistent worlds" role playing games seem to expect a natural obsolencence when gamers move on to the next shiny thing.
