Like many principal PV characters, Liu Xi is rather more than she seems, in part because of the extraordinary things she had endured and done. Sometimes I like to remind readers of this by juxtaposing our "regulars" with some generic, seemingly more powerful, entity, and simply watching as the uninqueness of the protagonist completely bulldozes the challenger.

I've been known to do that too. I usually try to avoid doing that with established characters though because people get mad. Happened with Hatman once, for instance. He put on the Psychic Samurai's headband and realized how easily she can hurt people, simultaneously discovering why she doesn't want to.

It's fun to write that stuff once in a while, to show not tell. One of my criticisms of some modern comics are that they assume that the hero has already established their heroic credentials, or that it's enough to just ell us this is the awesome good guy. It isn't.

I'm sure something horrible happened to her later on. But Johnstantine doesn't really have that Batman-style holy quest going on. His work and methods are rather more snide and subversive.

True, but the grudge had to start somewhere.

The real grudge-holder with Mefrotho was... the Hooded Hood.

Mefrothto's not there now.
