Liu Xi's not a neophyte any more, and she's developed a ruthlessness against evil that may even surprise the bad guys sometimes.

    Quote:
Sometimes when Liu Xi is among monsters she has to remember that she *is* one, in a way. She can warp the elements including mysterious void, spent time with a Shoggoth and an evil god (Exu), and may be the youngest Legionnaire to have killed. She has a stronger claim on evil than some demons do, so it's fortunate for everyone else that she decided to follow a different path.

Like many principal PV characters, Liu Xi is rather more than she seems, in part because of the extraordinary things she had endured and done. Sometimes I like to remind readers of this by juxtaposing our "regulars" with some generic, seemingly more powerful, entity, and simply watching as the uninqueness of the protagonist completely bulldozes the challenger.

Well, the starting point for this one was to tell a Con Johnstantine origin story in the style of the Nativity. The time-travel aspects were really a way of engaging some of the regular cast in it.

    Quote:
You lost a chance at some instant motivation there though - if his mom would have died, and he would have been raised a child orphaned by a demon, then he'd have a definite grudge against them.

I'm usre something horrible happened to her later on. But Johnstantine doesn't really have that Batman-style holy quest going on. His work and methods are rather more snide and subversive.
