Out of story, Vizh expressed a preference to have Hallie still a bit angsty and outside things rather than have her cosy and complete. I was going to have to manufacture a reason to disappoint her but then the board presented an excellent one.

    Quote:
To clarify, HH offered to go any direction I wanted with Hallie's membership, but I didn't have a strong preference either way so we talked pros and cons. The one thing I did request was that if we didn't put her on the team, that the reason wasn't as simple as her not wanting it. I felt that if she was totally content with her lot in life, then her story would be largely at rest.

In the end I decided to keep Hallie off the team because:

1. I got more angst that way and there's more story to play with. Hallie can still join later and get all the stories that provokes then.

2. Whenever the Legion haven't had Hallie in that resident A.I. niche writers have had to create substitutes like EDWIN. Why not just stick with the real thing?

3. Hallie as Legionnaire covers functions usually filled by Yuki, the Librarian, and Al B.

4. Hallie in combat can really only be taken down by damaging or destroying her HED (as opposed to all the various ways a human or near-human can be downed). That means a repetitious threat of personality destruction ("Did she leap clear in time?") and another character with free resurrections at will.

5. The new line-up is rather crowded anyhow.

    Quote:
Whether she makes the line up now, in the future or never, keeping her hungry to go farther keeps her interesting to me.

I do think we need to define and progress the Hallie/Vizh relationship however. I have a few ideas, fortunately.

    Quote:
Conversely, I already have Vizh as a character who is less driven, being there to react to absurd events rather than having plot lines spring directly from his motivations.

You want us to dump things on Vizh. Noted.
