Quote: Quote: I generally don't write Hallie as lacking in emotion or understanding of it, only sometimes in self-confidence.Quote: It's not because she's an AI, it's because she's trusting that people that will react in a certain way, and because her job is to share information. Even some humans (like me) don't quite understand edge cases in some people's limits to friendship.Quote: The way I imagined it, Hallie might tell someone she believes would be sympathetic that young Liu Xi made a mistake, or that it was an accident, but instead she gets a rather angry and violent response. And it's because she didn't understand where the limits of friendship between the two lay.Vizh does sometimes take time to demonstrate where Hallie's differences lay. She can be alien because she has access to different perceptions, senses, and experiences. So sometimes it's nice to bring readers up short and challenge their expectations. Quote: Quote: Quote: Quote: What is the maximum price one should pay for saving the Parodyverse?Quote: Quote: Faite would call that a "stupid question".Quote: Quote: Why?Quote: Because she doesn't believe in a maximum. She would weigh each case as it comes. The issue in debate is whether Vinnie is at fault in "sacrificng" his relationships or even himself to accomplish important tasks, including saving lives. There are a number of possibilities: 1. The sacrifice isn't neccessary. He is a fool. 2. There is a cost for accomplishing what must be done but it doesn't have to be Vinnie that steps up. He's either a hero or a fool for doing it, or a smart bastard or coward for letting someone else pay. 3. Only Vinnie has the opportunity to do what has to be done, but there are costs and conequences which will harm him or those he cares about. He has to prioritise cost vs benefits and make a hard choice. But bluntly, if your job is to stop evil from overwhelming millions or just damning one innocent soul, where can one draw a line and say "I'm not paying that"? It's the mathematics of destruction, to save a billion by sacrificing a million - or himself. That's Vinnie's problem. Most of the time he can do it smart and get away with it. Sometime on the edge, sooner or later, there'll be a choice he can't dodge. Quote: Quote: It's a while ago now, but didn't you already write them breaking up?Quote: Yes, but a) it wasn't supposed to be permanent, and b) it was caused by successful blackmail by Vinnie's family to force him to marry Pandemonica. Ironically, he was afraid that would make him become evil, but Liu Xi convinced him that he could use the opportunity to turn Pandemonica into a good person and turn the entire family around. I think. It's been a long time.I have a masive file on de Soth family backstory that I've yet to unship, although that may well be in the Vinnie novel series now if that progresses. Quote: Quote: From a writer's point of view, I think it would be easy to tell a story espousing either viewpoint depending on what events happened. It would be easy to have things work out to support each case. Quote: Of course there are lots of different views on it. Looking at it from Liu Xi's point of view, she has a lot of reason to be angry. Looking at it from Vinnie's view, he knows his family's history and how he feels he'll probably end up, and he's better off as far from Liu Xi as possible, even if it hurts her right now.Quote: And neither of those even cover outside influences like mortal enemies.Another worry Vinnie probably has (I would if I was him) is that his life and work seem to threaten absorbing Liu Xi's life. Even since she's come to America, Liu Xi has been dragged into being a co-player in other people's dramas. She's not really established a life or goals independent of her friends, lovers, or team-mates. She has no career, no stated ambitions, no life outide a very small circle of equally or more weird friends. That's not a criticism of her. It's consistent with her sad history and upbringing, and it is a natural corollary of her experiences and what's been done to her. But Vinnie must be concerned that Liu Xi's compassionate nature is always leaving her facilitating other people, so much that she's never stopped to work out what she wants. In fact Vinnie might even be getting a bit fed up with people taking Liu Xi for granted like that. At the least, he probably feels he owes it to her to accompany her on a Liu Xi adventure rather than drag her along on another Vinnie case. Quote: If she didn't already know Lara Night, Lara would be one of those people she couldn't predict.Noted. Quote: Chiaki's only advice would be not to rely too much on the gift, because the future is fluid. Chiaki doesn't really understand "visions" of things to come, because she sees multiple possibilities instead.Vespiir has actively tried to shut down her powers until very recently. Quote: There may be a difference there: Yuki is careful, but a little crazy. She'll jump off of a building, but only because she knows she has a reasonable escape or chance of surviving. The crazy part is where she doesn't worry about things normal people do, like what if I miss? What if the wind throws me off course? etc. She jumps, and she's 100% sure she'll make it when she goes.Strangely, I almost used that selfsame example about her last time I wrote. | |||||||
