Reply Subj: They were issues to me, in that I really wanted them established on record.

> > That's something Chiaki wouldn't particularly be concerned about. Whenever she does some clever manipulation in the crime underworld, there's usually a very subtle reason for it. In this case, she knew Vendredi would probably not try to kill her as long as she stayed in civilian life and out of his business. But because she knows that world all too well, and she senses just how crazy Vendredi can be, she took out "insurance".
>
> I was going to use the Emilio/Champagne meeting as Emilio's storyline in this chapter, but the opportunity of an offbeat Gamona/Emilio encounter was too good to let pass.

Noted. Though I hope Emilio knows the potential trouble he's getting into.

> > Why "insurance"? For all she knows, Hatman could shake down Vendredi again, or Akiko could do something, or possibly even Frankie, and next thing she knows, she's taken out in a drive-by shooting to send someone else a message. The "insurance" makes that an undesirable choice - not because Vendredi would be afraid, just because it's a lot of work having to deal with a tenacious alien assassin afterward. She doesn't plan on taking on Vendredi at all, really.
>
> Good to know.

Chiaki may be brave and clever, but she's not stupid. She would like to keep her distance from someone who's as much psychotic killer as businessman. She's an expert in negotiation - it's impossible to negotiate with someone who believes they can just massacre anyone who doesn't accept his terms.

> > I knew Violet was still working at the Bean & Donut, and got an accidental promotion. One of these days she needs a life promotion too. Especially since Hatman will probably come around to ask the poor cat-girl question about Myra, VV, and Regret, unless the Librarian could answer those questions.
>
> Hey,what happens in the Bean and Donut stays in the Bean and DOnut.

I guess eventually we'll find out just what kind of gossip Violet is.
