Previous Post

I know it's a clunky title but it's what I've been calling it on my computer. \:\)

In one of my other groups on the 'Net, The Initiative the seeds of starting up a "play by post" role playing game have been planted. Over the course of a week or two I came up with the character I want to "play" as. Besides getting your character approved by the Gamekeeper (she helped me come up with it) & post a Bio about your character you are to post an establishing entry to get your character going in the game. The game hasn't started due to real life event take precedence over online activities.

So, lieu of a in-PV story I gave you a out-of-PV story. I hope you don't mind.

High atop Millennium City, on the edge of the building in the downtown corridor there sits a man. His legs sway back & forth a bit.

He looks like a man out of time, his manner of dress denotes that of the mid 20th century. On his head is a Pilot's helmet wore by airmen from World War II, raised just above his eyes are a pair of tank driver's anti-flare goggles. He has a leather jacket that looks to have seen better days. Around his waist is a belt with two holster on either side, in those holsters are two hand held weapons which look to be right out of a comic book. Behind him is a large triangular badge shaped shield, it also looks to have seen better days. Under all this he is wearing a black full body suit and on his feet are seemingly new combat boots. Beside him is a small brown bag, next to that is a sandwich which is on a plastic bag that is flapping a bit in the slight breeze. The oddly dressed man is having lunch.

Then, he screams. A loud noise came over his headset which is hidden in his helmet.

"Chuck?" came a female voice. "Are you there?"

"yeah. But I think I might be deaf in one ear now." he replied crankily.

"Sorry about that, negative feedback for the equipment. But I got a job for you. It just came in over the police band."

"What is it?"

"Giant sinkhole has just opened up in the middle of an intersection in Mid-Town."

"And why is this a job for me? It's that more a public works problem?"

"Yes, if it was a normal sinkhole but this one has taken out the entire intersection & reports say there is growling from inside it."

"Which means that there is most likely something living it."

"Yes. Plus, there are reports that Hypergirl was seen heading that direction."

"Ok. I'm sure she can handle it."

'The female voice in Chuck's ear sighed. "Chuck, sure she could. She could handle it with both arms tied behind her back & mild case of PX-169 exposure. But that's not the whole point, the point is to network with your fellow Supers."

"What?"

"Network. Get to know your fellow costumed crime fighters."

"Hey! I network."

"No. No, you don't, Chuck. I've been friends with you for a few years now & I've seen how you work. Your social skills suck. Suck to a point it's almost comical. Plus, I want you to network since you don't have any special powers. All you have is a house full of 60 year old equipment that most of it only works half the time. You need some sort of back up. Back up with some special powers of their own."

"So, Hypergirl."

"Or anyone else of the people of that sort that are running around the city. Did you hear that down by the docks there is a Fishman doling out justice?"

"Doling out justice?"

"Yeah!" she said excitedly.

"Who says things like that?"

"Super Heroes. That's another thing we need to work on: your witting banter."

"I think I do pretty good at the moment."

"No, Chuck. At the moment, it's best that you don't say anything at all. I've also been thinking you need to speak in a lower tone."

"Why?" Chuck said as he took a bit of his sandwich. He quickly grabbed the plastic bag it was sitting on before it flew away.

"That way people wouldn't think it's you."

Chuck shallows the bite of sandwich & then says "But that's why I got the helmet & the goggles."

"Those help but remember when you saved me from that... altercation from that hero & their foe a few months back?"

"yeah."

"You know how long did it take me to figure it out that the mystery man known as Hero was also the man know to the world as Chuck Stevens?"

"Twenty Minutes?"

"No. Like Five minutes, maybe not even that. Now I had know you for awhile so people who don't know it will take them longer but we need to make it so people can't make the connection."

"Yeah.

"So, how about heading over to the massive sinkhole & teaming up with Hypergirl?"

"Ok. Do you have directions?"

"Yeah. Where are you?"

"Rooftop of a building."

She sighed. "Anything you can tell me?"

"I think it's on the corner of Lieber & Kurtzberg."

"Ok. Follow Lieber for 4 blocks, take a left on Adams & follow that until you get to the sinkhole."

"Thanks, Katy."

"Your welcome."

Chuck stood up, put the shield on his back, finished the last few bites of his sandwich & tossed the trash in the garbage can. Chuck pulled out of his left holster out one of his weapons, writing on the side was the word "Whippoon". He pulled the trigger, out flew the high-tensile wire with a four pronged hook at the end. There was a bit of kickback which meant the it had grabbed on to something. Chuck pressed rewind button & was off to save day as Hero!

FOOTNOTES!

- The character "Hypergirl" is the character played by the Gamekeeper. The character is partly based off of her favorite super hero: Supergirl. The "Fishman" mentioned in the story is a allusion to another's character who is an Atlantean.

- Yeah, I call my character "Hero" since when coming up with him I could come up with a good codename for him & the only thing that I had come up with was that one name as a joke. The Gamekeeper encouraged me to use it so I am. \:\)

Takes a lot of courage to willingly play a nearly-lame hero in an RPG. We've taught you well. \:\)
