If you read the story, Liu Xi does indeed lean close to Hatman to smell him.  Just to make sure.

Liu Xi would indeed have to lean pretty close to tell.  Of course Doorman could just avoid letting her get that close, but the sudden lack of trust would alert her as well.
Zdenka and Glory, though, would be able to tell if he just enters the same room.
