Subj: I have now seen it and quite enjoyed it! My thoughts with spoilers inside... Posted: Tue Dec 20, 2016 at 04:40:41 pm EST (Viewed 515 times) | Reply Subj: I look forward to reading your thoughts. Posted: Mon Dec 19, 2016 at 05:07:27 am EST (Viewed 521 times)
Quote: I very much enjoyed the particular attention to detail in making sure the costumes, foodstuff, and technology echoed that viewed in the source material (particularly the Return of the Jedi) which is rather 'quaint' today but when kept in place like this really lends gravitas to the whole shared universe theme. They did an excellent job of transporting me back to the original film with set designs (blue milk!) and choices. I did find the cameos a mixed bag... I enjoyed that they were there, and yet they also kind of pulled me out of things a bit... especially digital Peter Cushing. Quote: Some of the scenes were very nice homages to the earlier films, perhaps a little too much by the end - less is more? Yeah, they went a little further than I had expected there. Quote: The concepts for the main protagonists were well done, and there were some interesting folk it would be good to discover more about, but there wasn't enough fleshing out of their motivations and some of their choices and actions seemed forced rather than natural. The characters were interesting, but thinly sketched out. It's really hard to compete with the first film in regards to the creation of characters to latch on to... This film was all plot-driven, and perhaps a bit too convoluted in the amount of locations needed. They could have traded some of the running around for more time developing the characters, I thought. Quote: Most of the acting was good - there was some lousy dialogue and bit parts by one or two side characters - but not enough to detract from the main. I don't recall anything standing out enough to detract from the experience. I quite liked the rousing speeches... I'm a sucker for those. Quote: The final battle seemed a tad too long. And not really a spoiler, but Stormtroopers are still lousy shots. Indeed. My problem there was that they stretched out the part about needing to open the shield to get a signal out by making the rebels set up the relay to tell the fleet what they planned and all the while the fleet was already fighting trying to get the shield open anyway. You could edit out a huge chunk of that battle and it wouldn't matter, which makes the heroics of that part of the struggle seem a bit hollow. Quote: I'm very much over the Death Star - it's become an overused McGuffin - particularly I felt so in the Force Awakens. Its use here (and I don't think it's a spoiler to say it appears in the film? but just in case) is important though, and supplies an answer to an important question from the very first film. I agree, but this makes a good argument for the first being the best. They really sold the threat of it well here, despite the fact that they never blow up a planet with it until Alderaan in the original film. The planet killer in The Force Awakens just seemed old hat while this was intimidating as hell. Plus it was used to great visual effect, I thought. Quote: All up though it was an enjoyable way to re-visit the Star Wars mythos. The tie-ins to established content were well done and it fleshed out the whole universe a bit more. I think I'm going to enjoy seeing more of these stand-alone films. I agree. It had a refreshing vibe of a new style and tone while revisiting a lot that made the original film work so well. I'd like to see more of the Star Wars universe farther removed from the Solos and Skywalkers, although I gather it might be a while before that happens.
