So far her levels of maturity seem to vary. I'd still rate her a minor.

Anna behaves almost like a typical teenager at this point. But she's likely to outgrow a lot of that after Shee-Yar, just like a teenager thrown into a battle zone learns to grow up quickly. It's an experience of learning nobody will stop picking on you just because you cry.

But once ranges of powers are broached readers will always be asking "why doesn't she just use power x to get out of that?" and it gets really tedious having to explain each time why power x isn't applicable.

And it's tricky trying to figure out what's normal progression and what's pushing the point. Like Lara learning how to make a "delivery" without stopping is progression. Direct teleporting of items, not so much. That's why I ditched the latter.

But where it really becomes a problem is in a team situation, where each member has to make a contribution to make the narrative work. If Superman can run as fast as the Flash, calculate faster than Batman, fly faster than Hawkman, etc. then really he's become quite a problem.

I think I've just recently learned how to make group efforts work well. It's why until just a few months ago, I avoided dealing with more than 2 or 3 people in a story. The great bonus to it is I can surprise the reader by switching focus. For instance Liu Xi can seem like the star for most of it, then half the Lair Legion gets involved, and then at the last minute someone you never expect comes out on top.

    Quote:
There's a difference between the scope and the magnitude of powers though. I'm all for clever applications of super-powers, and for those "supreme push" moments when heroes go beyond their usual limits in a moment of heroism. I worry when characters get secondary power-sets that threaten to obscure the theme of their primary powers - like when Captain America was given "limited super-strength" or Superman became electrical.

I never liked the electrical Superman.

I made a decision a long time ago that Lara would never have natural super strength or invulnerability. I think that would take away any reason at all for her to feel vulnerable and have to overcome it. When you can smash your way into a room and ignore the bullets and throw people like matchsticks, you're not really afraid of anything. I wanted her to always have to think things through, and work for it if she wants to mimic that kind of strength and power.
