While I agree with the After-School special nature of many of JMS' stories about Peter the science teacher, it allows Peter to get involved with the underworld in a more human way than as a newspaper photographer. A lot of the kids at the school get involved in gangs, which connect to the larger mobs, which invariably put Peter in conflict with super-villains. Only this way, by seeing children being ruined by a culture of crime, it becomes personal for Peter.
