The book-length, morally complicated, and emotionally brutal books started with the Goblet of Fire; the earlier books were great, but they were more in the vein of classic children's literature
-- if they introduced a generation to reading, then the second half of the series introduced a generation to truly great storytelling.

Also, for making the Harry/Hermione shippers cringe in agony, the later books deserve props based purely on schadenfruede \:\)
