A villain/group of villains named the Black Glove are in the process of doing one of those "destroy every aspect of a hero's life before killing him" deals. Part of the plan involves the notes of an old PI that claims Thomas Wayne was a monster who had his wife addicted to heroin and later killed her and faked his own death when he found out she had an affair with the family butler, who may indeed be Bruce's real father.
