From what I recall, the hippos csn only explode when they are solid. Trapped in their current gaseous state they are pretty much helpless.

Well my inspiration came from the Tick cartoon. There was a scene where the Tick tries to infiltrate the gang of the villain Chairface Chippendale. One of the other minions says in order for the Tick to prove himself as a bad guy he has to eat a kitten.
