The last time I think it was controversial was when Northstar was in that "I AM TEH GAY!!1" Alpha-Flight story (and doesn't "Alpha Flight" and "gay" just seem to flow unusually well ?). And that was the early 90's. I've read about lots of gay super characters since then, but haven't noticed much controversy about it. Any examples?

... And resulted in at least one blogger recently decrying the preponderance of gays in comics nowadays, culminating with the incredibly ill-informed line, "This is all Warren Ellis' fault," because apparently the blogger believed there were no gays in comics before Apollo and Midnighter in The Authority.
Cue the condemnation of the original blogger by dozens of other bloggers, which inspired a backlash of support for the original blogger from several other other bloggers who claimed not to be homophobic, because, "I don't care what gays do, as long as they don't rub my nose in it," since having two guys kiss or hold hands in public in a comic book is so much worse than seeing a guy and a girl do the same thing, I guess.
