It would be like laughing at the victims of a car crash. I was interviewed by an American radio host last Sunday, and in the pre-show chat he took fifteen minutes to explain to me the importance of the Electoral Colleges to the founding fathers' visions of America, arguing that the recent college/popular vote split was exactly the situation the founders had envisaged when they made that constitutional provision, "protecting the rural heartlands from the big cities". Since my comment to trigger this was, "How are you doing today?" I conclude that the election and the rifts it highlighted are still very present in the US today.

The current situation does test the old saw about everybody getting the government they deserve.
