Just be sure you've paid off enough stuff that readers don';t get fed up of waiting for "the good stuff".

One possible format for this would be Amazon's exclusive e-novella programme, which likes linked but standalone stories of around 20-35k. If the first story in introductory before the main plotline kicks off that might fit quite well.
