I haven't really watched much of the Doctor's adventures since Eccleston, and I hadn't really seen any of it before that, so it's a bit too much continuity for me to really follow. Still, I quite enjoyed all of the hype leading up to the special online. (I feel for poor Christopher, who was looking forward to it but missed the simulcast online and every source he could find online after that had it taken down for copyright violations. I hope he eventually found a copy to watch.)

They certainly know how to throw an anniversary over on your side of the pond... It beats whatever that rainy boat-show was for the Queen.
