If you create an account here there's a neat last-read feature that uses color borders around the icons to tell you if there are any new posts in a thread. It lights up both the main post and the new replies with a red color. Not 100% accurate since it uses latest read post as a measurement (if you read the last post in the thread they'll all turn blue) but it's accurate enough.
