The strategy employed here seems to be all about impressing Mumphrey with their superior knowledge by dropping 'casual' comments about the Chronometer and making sure he's aware that they aren't going to tell him everything they know about it, or this threat. Really, I think Mumphrey isn't any more likely to fully buy into the idea that they know best than Liu Xi is going to fully trust the Void Scholar.
