The mini-sun is a better idea because it elevates the conflict between Spidey and Doc Ock beyond the personal. Superheroes are supposed to do things like save the city from mad scientists.
The John Jameson character would have worked better if he had more screen time. If they made him a cop or a firefighter instead of an Air Force pilot, for example, they could have included a scene where he crossed paths with Peter (or even kept the concept of Spider-Man saving John like he did in the original comics).

Yeah, they should have played the Spidey/JJJ relationship up more (I don't know why they left the scene with Jameson wearing the costume out of the original film. That was 1000x funnier than any of Bruce Cmpbell's shtick). In the end, though, its a great movie, the best of the frnachise, and probably my third favorite superhero film of all time, so I'd say what they did worked.
