Normal weapons work fine on them in 2nd Edition, which is what we were playing.

Incidentally, the first dungeon party I ever played in encountered one of these beasties, described by the DM as "a friendly little hen-type creature". On of our party, the fighter Majikthius, threw it some grain, and when the thing seemed happy with that, patted it on the head. And that was the end of Majikthius and the start of a long-running joke.

If you only read the first version of chapter one then you did miss this scene. It was the moment that Rhi and Alex noted was missing, and I amended it accordingly a few days back.
