Hence, multiple references in the story to hippos plural. "Dougal" was only supposed to be the hippo on duty at the front door, not Sgt. MacHarridan himself.

In hindsight, I can see how it would be better if it's just MacHarridan himself... although we could easily say he's the only one who stayed on past the end of the war.
