The author, Stephen Moffat, is probably my favourite screen writer. He also wrote The Empty Child and The Girl in the Fireplace, both Hugo award winners. He's recently done an excellent six-part drama called Jekyll, a sequel to the original Jekyll & Hyde story, set in the modern age. It's scary, smart, and as close to PAD's Banner/Hulk as we're ever likely to see on TV. Recommended.


This story started out life as a short text tale in the Dr Who Annual 2005, minus the Weeping Angels and featuring the Ecclestone Doctor. The original story's available on the BBC Dr Who website.

Each season now the Dr Who production team have a problem where they have to "double-bank" two episodes - film them at the same time so as to fit the Christmas special into the shooting schedule. This forces one episode to be "Doctor-lite". Last season it was Love and Monsters. This season, Moffat volunteered for the "cheap lo-Doctor ep" - and turned it into something spectacular.

What particularly impressed me was how Moffat managed to get me invested in Sally and her cast so quickly, the excellent use of the Doctor DVD in several contexts, and the sheer creepiness of villains that we never see move.


It's a fun episode with a stunning last ten minutes.

The BBC has now announced its future plans for Dr Who - 13 episodes and a Christmas special in 2008, but then a "gap year" with only 3 specials in it (still featuring Tennant) in 2009, followed by a full series again in 2010.
