I think it's one of those life-changing experiences, like seeing your parents murdered by a robber before your eyes or fighting in a war that forever after altered who you are and how you react. Thugos implies that with that knowledge comes power too.

I've got some background for Xander from the poster so I know in broad terms how he got the gig. Xander was apprenticed to the previous sorcerer supreme Lucius Faust. However, he's never really been about power, more about its application. He'd probably avoid the wall; it's outside his jurisdiction anyhow.
