Subj: You'd understand more if you stopped being a weak-ass bitch and watched Dune. :)Posted: Sat Dec 15, 2007 at 02:48:11 am EST (Viewed 359 times)

But since you're too much of a puss-weed to set aside six hours ...
> That's quite the amalgam of pop culture that drives Dream's dreams. It was almost a primal force of geekitude, and you have to admire that. Or back away slowly... either way.

I wanted to spotlight the non-comic book superhero archetypes that Dream's character drew from, so Tricksters Bugs Bunny and Doctor Who were a given, as were Luke Skywalker and Paul Muad'Dib, as Joseph Campbell Hero's Journey Messiahs. I considered references to Tolkien, but while I enjoyed his stories, I never really identified with any of his characters. I also debated whether I should have had Dream wear the Auryn, the snake-symbol medallion worn by Atreyu in The NeverEnding Story, but while I still kind of wish I'd included it, because I tried to work in at least two nods to each character or concept that served as an influence, I ultimately decided against it, because Dream's collection of costume elements was probably busy enough as it was.
> I suppose there was never any chance that he'd simply be dreaming of knitting or something, so I shouldn't be surprised. I quite liked the desert of sugar and the Quesada nod. Well done!

Quesada gave me a chance to tie back not only to the Hooded Hood and Darth Vader, but also to Dune archvillain Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (who's actually described as "the floating fat man" by fellow Dune archvillain Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV). The desert being made of sugar didn't even occur to me until after the story was nearly complete, since the opening scenes, before "Atreyu" appeared, were the second-to-last parts of the story that I wrote.
