It's not like college is getting any easier to pay for these days, after all... every little bit helps. A wonderful surprise to find on the board... I'm quite glad Rhiannon came back from Italy to inspire it. I hope her outing was quite a bit more pleasant than the zoo trip contained here was for all involved. I've not been myself, but I've heard it's pretty nice and not at all like chasing a vengeful imaginary predator down into the sewers. I always enjoy stories with the kids, and having the enemy here straddle the line between Samantha and the twins was a fun twist. What kind of upbringing did those kids have indeed? It's interesting that they all have such dark events in their past, however Maggie and Griffin grew up surrounded by it and sought to find the good parts until they were suddenly rescued from it all... Poor Sam had a relatively safe childhood before the worst suddenly came crashing down upon her. It gives them all rather different outlooks on their current lives and sets up some very different drives for the characters. Vinnie was fun, of course, and naturally had a clever way to deal with the threat. It's a shame that there was nobody there to press him as to why exactly he carries around a glamour to change women into busty, scantily clad (okay, "accurate") copies of a certain Caphan. Somehow, "to bring invisible fiends into puberty" just doesn't sound all that convincing. So Tammy now has a patchwork abomination for an invisible friend? Do you suppose that's how griffins came about in the first place? All in all, a delightful addition... Thanks for posting it!

anime.mangacool.net (10.0.255.1) using Apple Safari 5.0.3 on MacOS X (0 points) ...because if the kids ask Liu Xi a similar opening question to what they asked Vinnie, she'll actually explain what the phrase means. Fortunately she's good at explaining things, as long as Visionary isn't within earshot it should turn out fine. Everyone really did have a purpose - Vinnie was needed for his um, sorcery, Magweed and Griffin to actually see what needed fixing, and Samantha for her investigative logic. Any single one of them simply couldn't have done the job. The real question is, why is Vinnie always carrying around things he needs for Liu Xi later on?

I started this story last July then stalled about halfway through. It sat there on my hard drive unfinished and unloved until around December, when I was asked to submit a short horror story to a magazine on the subject of "children's nightmares". I decided that an invisible friend gone bad might be a good theme for that, so I subsequently wrote up a tale - "Katie's Dolly" - which utilised the idea in a far more nasty and serious way. Apart from the concept of the monster there wasn't any other similarity. However, I heard back a couple of weeks ago that the story had been rejected. I wanted to write a welcome-back-from-your-visit-to-Pompeii story for Rhiannon yesterday so I decided to return to the PVB tale and complete it. So here it is, after a strange journey. I think now I might go and proofread edit it since I've now spotted a few mistakes.

Samantha plays that role to some degree but has a far more sceptical, non-mystical view of the world that helped contract with her best friends being a fairy princess and a data anomaly fabulous beast. These days I can't help writing Sam as if she's a 14-year old Bruce Wayne. Over here, as part of our budget defecit measures, the government has allowed top college fees to go rise to £9,000 a year - that's be around, what $16,000? Plus subsistence and lodging. I'm starting to feel poor. And while I'm ranting, I tried to get Rhiannon insured to drive my car now she's 17. They wanted an additional £4,500 insurance premium (above my existing £700 premium)! anime.mangacool.net (10.0.255.1) using Apple Safari 5.0.3 on MacOS X (0.06 points) Quote: One reason Liu Xi isn't in this story is that she's far too sensible. These days I can't help writing Sam as if she's a 14-year old Bruce Wayne.Liu Xi is sensible yet accepting. She wouldn't be particularly disturbed by invisible friends and creatures, but it's not the first thing she'd think of, either. What I think is interesting though is that Samantha and Liu Xi have both endured trauma of having their childhood violently torn from them, but they've each dealt with it in entirely different ways. Sam took more a "justice" route - wanting to make right what happened to her by proactively preventing it from happening again to someone else. Liu Xi took a more passive approach instead, discarding her past and moving on (though she still gets particularly angry in cases that are too similar to hers). Then again, maybe it's a bad comparison because Liu Xi has the gift of elemental power - if Sam had the same thing, she might be more confident and feeling she didn't have to work at it so much. They'd both be jealous of Lara Night though - she didn't have a completely normal childhood, but hers was far more tame than most super-heroes'. Her parents simply divorced instead, and she lived away from them by choice. Incidentally, she also loves fairy tale stuff so she probably would have really enjoyed seeing this mission in action, even though Vinnie didn't so much. Quote: Quote: The real question is, why is Vinnie always carrying around things he needs for Liu Xi later on?Quote: I think that object probably was a condom.Probably, but why didn't he leave it wherever he'll be later with Liu Xi? Also mingling it with his spell packets, that can cause a nasty accident. He could go looking for a condom in the dark and accidentally release a demon or something.

I would say that Vinnie doesn't even seem to get much good karma out of his life, but then I remembered that he has apparently taken up some fun activities with a hot Chinese woman, so there's that. Quote: Tell me about it. Over here, as part of our budget defecit measures, the government has allowed top college fees to go rise to £9,000 a year - that's be around, what $16,000? Plus subsistence and lodging. I'm starting to feel poor.It was pretty damn pricey when I was in college so many years ago, so I don't imagine it's getting any better. I do see commercials on television where you can get your degree from home and don't even need to change out of your pajamas. You might not even have to do coursework. The prices seem very reasonable too. I can try and order a brochure for you if you like... Quote: And while I'm ranting, I tried to get Rhiannon insured to drive my car now she's 17. Relatively few miles on it for as old as it is (working from home has benefits.) Delivery might be an issue though. Quote: From what I gathered last night it involved walking across a live volcano, visiting the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, finding off ants, being one of four students who weren't involved in a night club incident, loving Italian ice cream, and getting rained on.That sounds pretty good, actually. I love good gelato, and nightclub incidents are almost always overrated. The rain part could be a downer, but it'd make me feel better about crossing the live volcano. Admittedly, a strong drizzle probably only does so much to quell molten magma, but then thermodynamics were never my strong suit. Quote: Yes, I quite like the dynamic because of it. Of course, the kids are isolated enough that there's not a lot of peer pressure to help drive wedges between them. That Vinnie's a cunning one. Clever combination of characters here, and the scattering of cute elements made those grisly bits all the more powerful. On Sam: got to admire a girl who does her research. She also makes in passing an intriguing comment about the ecology of imagination. Great tale, well told.

Samantha has developed a darker response by cultivating a revenge against the victimiser.Liu Xi definitely harbors some feelings of revenge too, but she doesn't let it consume her because she's seen what it can do to people around her. She might be one of the first to warn Samantha of that danger. Though most people just think it's cute she's turning into a young super-detective, Liu Xi might see the uglier side of it because it mirrors something hidden that she dislikes in herself. Quote: Apparently Rhiannon was also shown the "inactive" half of the volcano, on which the Italians have built an old folk's home and a tourist campsite.No. We actually walked around the active half. But there was at least 10cm of rock between us and the volcanic stuff, except for the spots where it was cracked and sulphorous gas was pouring out, so that was OK. Also, the old folks home was on the other volcano, and not in the crater.

Quote: Quote: I suspect her upbringing might dispose her towards accepting animalistic and unseen household spirits anyhow.Quote: The Eastern themed ones are usually much richer in style and purpose. At least more defined. Quote: Quote: I see Liu Xi as having developed an empathy with victims, honed because of some of her subsequent encounters (with Princess Annar, for example). Samantha has developed a darker response by cultivating a revenge against the victimiser.Quote: Liu Xi definitely harbors some feelings of revenge too, but she doesn't let it consume her because she's seen what it can do to people around her. She might be one of the first to warn Samantha of that danger. Though most people just think it's cute she's turning into a young super-detective, Liu Xi might see the uglier side of it because it mirrors something hidden that she dislikes in herself.]Indeed. Quote: Quote: And look at the influences and mentors each of them has had. Liu Xi's run with the Shoggoth, with Xander, with Lara, with Hatty, and with Vinnie. Samantha apprenticed herself to the Dark Knight, to Champagne, and watched Mumphrey through his darkest days running the Parody War defence. Apart from Magweed and Griffin she has relatively little contact with compassion.Quote: It's never too late to acquire new mentors. Magweed and Griffin are good ones. Maybe Mumph will be smart and assign Samantha to learn martial arts and swordplay from the Psychic Samurai, and Samantha will get a heavy dose of humility and compassion with her lessons. Chiaki is very calculating at times, but also always empathetic.Sam's very good at absorbing lessons but somewhat less wise in the lessons she chooses to apply. Quote: Quote: Quote: Then again, maybe it's a bad comparison because Liu Xi has the gift of elemental power - if Sam had the same thing, she might be more confident and feeling she didn't have to work at it so much.Quote: Quote: Sam's an over-achiever and she pins her self-worth on her accomplishments. Liu Xi has other measures of herself.Quote: Like I mentioned above, that's something that can change quickly. Samantha can learn to measure her self-worth through her teachers instead, if she enjoys their lessons and company enough. Liu Xi could still lose everything and have to find her own measurement.Well, I try to wrote every character with strengths and flaws. That's what makes them interesting to me. The heroic journey is often about overcoming flaws. Quote: Quote: I think now Sam would view having a "normal" childhood as a weakness that leaves one unprepared for its eventual bloody destruction.Quote: She won't have much luck convincing Lara of that. Lara would probably tell her that she's not ashamed of her childhood because while linked to the whole of energy of the universe, it's what grounds her and makes her still feel human. And yes, even now that she no longer speaks to them, she still has the memory of better times.Sam's now actively planning to prevent other children having to face what she did. Quote: Quote: The other question is why was he carrying a turn-you-into-a-Caphan glamour.Quote: He can get into serious trouble with that one.Noted.

That's what makes them interesting to me. The heroic journey is often about overcoming flaws. That's why I think if internal flaws as more fun than external ones. External flaws, or limits, are way too easy to overcome. From within, often a character has to sacrifice something that has very far-reaching implications. For instance: Lara Night has to overcome her own fears. She's terrified that she will kill someone; but even more than that, she'll be forced to do something awful so that nobody will ever see her the same way again, and she'll be outcast. Liu Xi Xian has to overcome her own anger and self-destructive tendencies. She also needs to learn futility, because she always believes she can win somehow. She's just now learning how to bond properly with someone. The Psychic Samurai's biggest flaw is that she's so detached from everything. She separated herself from Akiko Masamune somewhat, she refuses to join the Lair Legion, and she keeps half her friends at a distance. She believes nobody understands the dilemma she got herself into, always living in the grey between the criminal world and heroes. Yuki Shiro also has a similar flaw, that she keeps people at a distance - but she does it more because she knows she'll outlive and outlast them all. So she remains emotionally detatched so she won't be hurt.
