I'll start. Reading ( Prose ): The Sherman Alexie book " Indian Killer ", a multi-perspective murder mystery about a Spokane-Indian themed serial killer who scalps their victims. Given Alexie's literary background, the focus is more on the wave of anti-Native American bigotry sparked by the murders, rather than the mystery itself. Reading ( Comics ): Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca is my favorite superhero comic on the stands at the moment, for so directly and brutally addressing Tony Stark's self-hating ablism by forcing him to sequentially lobotomize himself ( I won't spoil how the World's Most Wanted story wrapped up here, but....damn ). For graphic novels, I finally got my own copy of We3 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, a brilliant animal rights story with surprisingly non-anthropomorphized protagonists. Watching ( TV ): Teppen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the anime by Studio Gainax that could be considered a Crowning Series of Awesome. Galaxy-sized drills powered by sheer determination? Sold! Watching ( Movie ): Planet 51, an awful animated movie I saw on behalf of a young boy I've done some behavioral work with. I'm glad he enjoyed it, because I only got five minutes into the " the alien world is like 50's America and the human is the alien " gimmick before I was terminally bored by the predictable puerility. Playing: Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii, the greatest feat of Nintendo nostalgia porn to date, with a pretty good fighting game attached as well. Any others? www.rubysworldcomic.com

Reading: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and the giant 860 page history of manga 'A Drifting Life' by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Watching: You. Through your bathroom window. (Okay, now that I've successfully skeeved you out, I'm really not watching anything at the moment. Not a big TV person. I saw 'Inglorious Basterds' a couple weekends ago and thought it was awesome. I guess I'm also watching 'The Wire' and 'Rome' on DVD on my laptop. So I'm wrong. I am watching something.) Playing: I don't play videogames anymore. Not because I've matured or any silly notion like that, but because I don't have the money to buy new games or the time to get immersed in a really awesome game that will suck in my life. The last great game I played was 'Fallout 3'. Before that, 'Bioshock'. I will get 'Bioshock 2' when it comes out, but these days my game playing is few and far between.

" Reading: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and the giant 860 page history of manga 'A Drifting Life' by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. " To Kill a Mockingbird is always a classic, but I'd never heard of the " Drifting Life ". It's a history of manga, you say? Is it any good? Is it worth the 860 page investment of time/money? www.rubysworldcomic.com

Quote: Iron Man vol 5 #1-19: I’d heard good things about Fraction’s shellhead and I wasn’t mislead. There’s some very solid work here, albeit clearly initially aimed at meeting the Iron Man movie crowd; Iron Man is “born†in Afghanistan, Pepper is Stark’s perky potential love interest, the “repulsor battery†chestpiece is the unique key to Iron Man technology and so on. Stark is likeable for the first time in an age and in his “Most Wanted†phase (#8 onwards) seems to be paying his karmic debts for Civil War. Fraction seems to be gradually rolling Tony back to a more usable status quo, eliminating the do-anything Extremis armour, the “Starktech dataspine†etc. My main concerns are that Pepper has now joined the long list of Tony’s friends who regularly wear second class suits of his armour and that now her relationship with Stark has become sexual she’s no longer able to stick around for the long haul.I wrote a couple essays on the current arc, located on my blog; http://nitzthebloody.blogspot.com/2009/10/compensating-with-repulsor-power-iron.html And at the end of the arc; http://nitzthebloody.blogspot.com/2009/10/those-who-use-r-word-iron-man-and.html I am inclined to agree regarding Pepper, as sleeping with a superhero gives venereal bad karma. That said, I really like the way Pepper is being handled in this series, and am glad that Marvel and Fraction are aware of the movie's success and incorporating it into the book. Continuity issues aside ( such as HOW DO REPULSORS POWER ANYTHING, the new HOW DO TRANSISTORS POWER ANYTHING ), I'm glad to see that the book isn't so thematically different from the commercially successful and highly entertaining film. Quote: Mighty Avengers #21-29: This book feels more like the Avengers than any other out there, and I suspect that’s Slott’s intention. Jarvis is the key, I suspect. Kudos for taking Pym forward and putting him centre stage without removing any of his baggage, for bringing the Vision back into an Avengers team (albeit not quite the right Vision), and for finding something to do with Quicksilver. I really enjoyed Hawkeye’s (Clint Barton’s) recent guest shot and his exchanges with Pietro, and Jarvis’ reaction to an old-style roomful of gathered heroes in the Infinite Avengers Mansion. My problem with Dan Slott's writing is that he's better at comedy than drama, and tends to give characters comedic stereotype personalities and witty banter even when the story doesn't suit it. This isn't as much of a problem in Mighty Avengers, but we still get rather flimsy character development ( most notably with Cassie Lang, who is so very, very far below the competence and maturity requisite for being an Avenger ). Still, it is good to see a continuation of the Old Avengers, and one that doesn't try to erase present continuity, at that. Quote: I'm watching Clone Wars and Super Hero Squad with the children. The former's second series doesn't seem as strong as the first, with no outstanding episodes yet. The latter is goofy fun as long as I switch my brain off; it's interesting to see the cartoon pay more attention to characterisation and continuity than some comics.Super Hero Squad is fun for all the continuity Easter Eggs within; seeing Captain America heading to a re-enactment and saying " What's the worst that could happen in a Civil War " was just mean. Quote: Meanwhile I'm working on using all this to stoke a genuine adventure story that can also address themes of rulership, collapse of civilisation, faith, expectations of religion, expectations of heroes, and why dragons have a right to rule the Earth. They certainly couldn't do much worse than us, so... www.rubysworldcomic.com

"A Drifting Life" Is it worth the money? Oh yeah. HIGHLY recommended. Definitely engrossing. I'm not even a big fan of manga, but I couldn't put it down. It concerns life in post-war Tokyo as much as it does the birth of manga. You can find it on Amazon. And even though it's an almost 900 page monster, since it's basically a comic, it doesn't take too long to read. I finished it in about 3 days. http://www.amazon.com/Drifting-Life-Yoshihiro-Tatsumi/dp/1897299745/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

I'm unfortunately not reading much of anything these days, other than random internet snippets between scrabbling for paying work and sending out resumes. So I'm busy, but at a fraction of the income I was making before the company I worked for went under, leaving me with little free time or money. So that kind of sucks. However, in my internet readings I'm learning various super-hero related facts such as: Superman apparently set up shop down in Mexico: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/04/photogalleries/giant-crystals-cave/index.html Also, it's probably not too early to start designing your own functioning super-suit, since clothing that will do pretty much whatever you want will be available soon enough: http://www.cracked.com/article/212_5-materials-that-will-make-world-as-we-know-it-obsolete/

... And it's mostly been Comic Books! From DC: - The Batman Books (Batgirl, Batman, Batman: Streets of Gotham, Detective Comics & Gotham City Sirens): I'm giving BG & B:SoG a few more issues to see if they'll be better (not really sure I like the stories going on in the books). I thought was BG was going to be a lot better given that it followed up the awesomeness that was the mini-series "Oracle: The Cure". Both Batman & GCS has been good, I like how they have been written. Detective Comics has been been but I'd continue to pick up the book if even if the story was not so good because of JH Williams III's art. - The Superman Books(Action Comics, Adventure Comics, Power Girl, Supergirl, Superman, Superman: Secret Origin & Superman: World of New Krypton): I started to pick up Action Comics to read the awesome Legion story by Geoff Johns but then it went into the cool Brainiac arc & followed into the whole New Krypton thing which then I started to pick up the entire line to get the whole story. It's been pretty good for the most part. I'm really surprised that I actually like the Supergirl book. I'm wondering what will happen to New Krypton after this whole storyline/Story Arc is over. Adventure Comics is awesome & has one of the "second Feature" stories that I actually like. Plus, Issue #4 was been pure Awesome! Superman: Secret Origin isn't anything really all that different then what has been said before but it's the little changes/ additions by Johns & the art by Gary Frank that makes be pick it up. Power Girl is the one book that doesn't really tie into the whole "New Krypton" thing or anything else but it's one of the more fun books out there. - I'm reading Blackest Night, it's tie-in miniseries (could have done without the BN Superman miniseries, it missed on a few point for me. The BN Batman series was cool & I really look forward to seeing where the events from BN Titans series play out) & a number of the other tie-in issues (Like Doom Patrol). As for the series at large: I've been enjoying it & wondering how it will all turn out. - Booster Gold: what can i say about this book? A lot probably but it's one of the constantly better solo hero books I read. - Flash: Rebirth: a good book that has lost some of it momentum (pun?) do it it's lack of coming out on time (there a few months in between each issue) but when it comes out it's good! - Justice Society of America: I'm not so sure about this book anymore, since the new writer & artist has come aboard not liking this book so much. The recent 80 page giant was really well done. The art for the Damage/Dr. Mid-Nite story was really inventively done. - The Unwritten: hmmm.... what can I say about this book? I'm not exactly sure. It is one of the more literary books I read out there. A definite read & book I'd recommend to anyone & have to 2 people. Graphic Novels!: - I picked up the first trade of Secret Six because I heard the book was good & it was for the most part. Not sure I'd pick up the next one but a nice series. - Superman: Red Son: an elseworlds tale of if Superman grew up Communist, a good story with a twist ending I wasn't expecting. - Over the course of a bout a month I've read almost the entire series Y The Last man. & it's been interesting ride. I'm sort of sad that in 2 trades it'll be over. - Over my trip abroad (to Australia & New Zealand) I read Watchmen & it was good. I also saw the movie & that as crap. - I've read Final Crisis at least 2 or 3 times hoping to understand it all & I still down. I'm also starting to think I never will. - I started to read James Robinson's Starman in the omnibus' & it's a good series. On to Marvel...... - Agents of Atlas: Good Book written by a really nice guy, Jeff Parker (I've met him a few times). - Avengers: The Initiative: a book I've enjoyed in the past & am sticking around to see how it survives the Dark Reign of Norman Osborn. - Captain America: Reborn: Good Book! The normal Cap book is on hiatus & this book is telling the story of how Steve Rogers is coming back. - Dark Avengers: I pick up this book mostly for one person: Norman Osborn. I'm waiting for his epic fail. - Fantastic Four: wasn't so hot on the later half of the Millar/Hitch run on the book but the new arc with new writer, Jonathan Hickman, is turning into something really interesting. I hope he can maintain the awesome! - Guardians of Galaxy: was a good book but since I have not been following "War of Kings" the book has kind of lost me (I only feel like I'm getting a part of a larger story which I am). Since this book will tie into the "Realm of Kings" storyline I'm not sure how much longer I'll stay with the book. - Incredible Hercules: I started to pick this up because I heard the Agent of Atlas would be having a back up stories in the book so I thought I'd check it out before hand & I sort of hopped that I had been reading the book before now since It's really good. Good writing, good art, good characterization of those in the book. The "Assault of New Olympus" arc/event looks to be interesting. - Invincible Iron Man: I started to read this because I liked the Iron Man movie & have continued to read the book since it's just plain awesome! - Mighty Avengers: One of the consistently best team books I read. When writer Dan Slott said that he wanted to put the "most Avengery Avengers books" He wasn't lying. - Secret Warriors: The other book by Jonathan Hickman that I read & it's good. -X-Babies: This book is kind of letting me down. It's not really about the X-Babies themselves but more about "How can we bring back Star Comics characters?" If I'm going to buy a book called X-Babies, I want it to be about the X-Babies!

I wrote a seminar paper on it for a postmodernism graduate class, and I'm not much closer than you. It's more of academic interest than entertainment value, though it does have its moments ( particularly the Superman: Beyond tie-in ). www.rubysworldcomic.com |
