Subj: Ah, but that's talent, making the excruciating seem effortless. Or I suppose, ample amounts of painkillers. Either way.

Reply Subj: I have to say, I certainly didn't breeze through writing it this time.

That was the hardest bit. Fortunately Rhiannon trawled through those AMB posts and I had Xander's ancient and incomplete archive of very early BZL stuff (some copied from secondary sources like the long-defunct GeoCities archive).

She's an invaluable resource. You're clearly not paying her enough.

Since this chapter is even more metatextual than usual, it felt right to acknowledge that I still feel a bit guilty for intruding late in the BZL madness and then cuckooing my way into rewriting it. So I wanted to acknowledge that somewhere in the foundations of the Hood's power there are crushed lost stories and characters.

I admit, this kind of insanity salad is pretty much my recollections of the origin of the PV, even today (complete with only half-remembered fragments of stories and no idea where they ended up leading). It's nice to have a version of things that makes sense, but I'll never quite shake my faith in the random nonsensical beginnings with Gilgamesh cow heads and whatnot... even if I can't remember them clearly.

Well, having written the "first date" story for those two crazy kids I thought I needed to offer some proper payoff at the last.

They really don't know how to do these things in proper order, considering their teenage kids play a major role in things.

With this storyline I have relaxed my self-imposed prohibition on some "retired" poster-characters. I think the statute of limitations may be up. Hence Banjooooo's recent prominence, and now Jarv gets a speaking part.

I had to really curb myself in not to cover all the other old cast dropping in to comment too.

I think keeping it under control is the better way to go, as much as I love many of our departed characters. The chapter already name drops so many...

The confrontation between Hacker 9, Aella and the kids was great fun, with everyone involved proving to be more than what they seem at first glance. Too bad the DoomHerald didn't grab the little punk instead.,.

It is certainly narratively useful that that exact cast with that exact skillset is just where it needs to be right now.

How fortuitous that they did that for you then. They are a helpful batch of good kids. And the little punk.

I'm not entirely sure how moving the big battle inside of the Dreaming Celestia's head helps matters yet, but it was an inventive gambit and if you have to go, may as well take that giant tool with you.

There's a revelation twist to that plot for next time.

I would expect nothing less! Although honestly it need not even be a very clever twist to surprise me.

Good stuff all around! Looking forward to the big finish!

It is feeling like a really big task so it might take a week or two.

I understand... I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

From the previous story's replies:

The publishing model of modern comics really precludes long-term loyalty building. There are still some interesting coherent series out there though. Astro City has just hit its hundredth issue (numbered vol 3 #47 I think) - intriguing because its characters have aged in real time.

It's still going? Wow... I haven't heard about it in a long time, and hadn't read any since Busiek had to put it on hold due to his health. Glad to hear that he improved and got back to it. Aging in real time is an interesting angle to use to set things apart.

Honestly, the only thing I've read recently was the Vision series, which as I said was quite excellent but rather disconnected from what I knew. It felt like reading "The Last Avengers Story", or something similar.

And I read IDW's pony comics now and then, of course. It's nice to have some that I can pass on to other family members. Very hit and miss though.

I seem to be the only person appreciating what they're doing with Agents of SHIELD right now. Although if you're not watching it you should be, since they're covering your area of obsession, artificial intelligence sentience and rights, with a whole arc about LMDs and a strong perfomance from the actress who played the villain in Galavant as looking-for-answers-and-read-the-Darkhold-for-them robot Aida.

I've been keeping up with AoS and enjoying it myself! I honestly was hoping that we might get to keep LMD May on the team with the original May dying, but it was not to be. I think that it would be a shame not to come out of this with an artificial intelligence member of the team, but it doesn't seem in the cards right now. We'll have to see how the Matrix-ish Framework storyline goes, but they clearly have shown their intention to have fun with it. I'm hoping to see Zola involved, to help explain the Hydra bits...

Well, the work-life balance problem turned out to be sudden onset diabetis.

    Quote:
Wow, that's scary... I'm sorry to hear that. Glad that you were able to get it diagnosed though, and I hope you're progressing well.

I'm certainly recovering, with performance varying from about 60% - 140% of what I've been experiencing these last couple of years. Sustained performance is still a problem though, and it has really affected my work capacity.

Glad to hear that you're feeling an improvement, and I hope that it continues!
